The Prize Box
Tina Klare
Congratulations to Tina Klare of Crescent Springs, KY, on being chosen as the August Idea of the Month winner! Tina won $100 for sharing how she uses the Prize Box as a way to hold her students' attention and encourage retention of the day's lesson.
Challenging! That’s the word Tina Klare uses to describe teaching Church
history to eighth graders. And many would agree with her description.
But Tina has found a way to hold her students’ attention.
Before her students leave class, Tina asks each one to tell her one thing he or she learned from the lesson presented during that session. Tina’s rule: No one may repeat anything another student has already said.
“Once they tell me one thing they learned, they may pick a prize from my box,” Tina explains. “After the first class they know what is coming and they pay attention. I was surprised at how excited 13- and 14-year olds are about picking something from the box.”
Tina fills her box with religious-themed items such as WWJD bracelets, rosaries, rubber balls, magnets, and so on. To fill the box, Tina looks for inexpensive items that can be purchased in bulk from sources such as the Oriental Trading Company (search for “Religion”) and from Autom Catholic. Tina also collects free items and samples at youth ministry workshops and conferences she attends.
Tina Klare is director of youth ministry and eighth-grade catechist at St. Joseph Parish, Crescent Springs, KY.
