“This year I received some divine inspiration!”
That’s what Pat Schulze says about her idea for a game that gives children a break for fun in the serious business of preparing for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
As a second-grade catechist, Pat has found that sacramental preparation fills her time with the children. With only 30 classes, each 1½ hours long, she has not had much time for extras. But that’s where divine inspiration helped out.
At the beginning of the year, Pat made up a blank Bingo card with Jesus in the “free” spot and gave copies to her second-graders (click here for a template you can use). Then, each week, as children learned key words from their textbooks, she had them write those words in the blank squares on their Bingo cards. Each child could choose where to write the words so that each Bingo card was different. In turn, Pat wrote each key word on a slip of paper.
When the blanks on the children’s Bingo cards were filled with words they had learned, Pat and her class were ready to play a special version of Bingo. Using the slips of paper she had created, Pat called out key words. Children marked the words they found on their cards with small pieces of colored paper until someone scored Bingo.
With Pat’s version of Bingo, children get a break from working with their textbooks, but are still learning. As they play the game, they are reviewing the key words they have learned throughout the year.
Pat has served as a second-grade catechist at Holy Rosary Church in Warrenton, MO, for 15 years.
