May 16: Ascension of the Lord
Luke 24:46-53
Reflecting
In
today’s Gospel, we hear about the Ascension of Jesus. He is raised from
the dead and has spent time with his disciples. Now he promises his
followers that they will have power from on high, and then he is “taken
up to heaven.”
Before Jesus leads his followers to Bethany, he
emphasizes to them that they have been witnesses to the Messiah, that
they have witnessed his suffering and death and rising from the dead,
that they know of the forgiveness of sins that is to be preached to all
nations in his name. “You are witnesses of these things,” he says.
Today’s
First Reading (Acts 1:1-11) gives us more words of Jesus to his
followers about being witnesses: “You will receive power when the Holy
Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses….”
Today we
continue the witness of the early followers of Jesus. As baptized
Catholics, our entire lives witness to the love of God, faith in Jesus,
the forgiveness of sins, and life everlasting.
