Ideas for teaching your students about this Sunday’s Gospel, including reflections, sharing ideas, activities and prayer.
February 28: 2nd Sunday of Lent
Luke 9:28-36
Reflecting
Some of our recent Gospel reflections have emphasized the importance of listening. Today’s Gospel is very clear about listening to Jesus. A voice from a cloud proclaims “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”
Today’s Gospel is about the Transfiguration. Jesus and three of his Apostles go to the top of a mountain where the Apostles see Jesus’ splendid and radiant glory.
They doze off, though, and when they wake up, they see how glorious Jesus is while he talks with Moses and Elijah. They hear the voice in the cloud say, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”
Lent is a good time for us to think about how clearly we listen to Jesus. The Apostles were with Jesus, the Son of God, yet they dozed off. Do we doze off or do we remain alert and with Jesus in our hearts all the time? Are we careful about getting to Church on Sunday but are not very focused on our Catholic faith the rest of the week?
Do we take the time to talk to Jesus in prayer every day and to listen for his message to us in our hearts?
Sharing Ideas
What keeps us from listening to Jesus? What helps us to listen to Jesus?
Acting
Sit up straight with both feet on the floor, quiet and perfectly still, for as long as you can. Let your heart and soul listen to Jesus.
Praying
God of Glory, quiet our hearts. Help us pay attention and stay awake, so that we never miss what your Son Jesus says to us. Amen.
