February 21: 1st Sunday of Lent
Luke 4:1-13
Reflecting
This past Wednesday—called Ash Wednesday—marked the beginning of Lent. We have entered that season in the Church year when we prepare ourselves for the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus: Easter. When Jesus rose from the dead he overcame and conquered death for all eternity.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus faces and overcomes temptation from the devil. Jesus doesn’t wrestle with the devil or try to zap the devil with some kind of special power. Jesus doesn’t even argue or try to reason with the devil.
Rather, Jesus overcomes the temptations of the devil simply by remembering sacred Scripture. That’s all he does. Jesus remains cool and calm and simply says, “It is written…” and then goes on to tell the devil the wisdom of Scripture.
The Word of God was Jesus’ strength—and it is ours today. The season of Lent is a good time for us to learn more about the power of Scripture in our daily lives.
Sharing Ideas
What is temptation? (Responses will vary.) What helps us overcome temptation? (Responses might include: prayer; Scripture; turning our attentions from what is tempting to something that is good, like helping others; etc.)
Acting
There are six Sundays in Lent. Each week, take time to read that Sunday’s Gospel before Mass.
Praying
God of Goodness, form in our hearts a longing to know you through your holy Word: Scripture. Amen.
