Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21
Reflecting
In today’s Gospel, Jesus attends the synagogue in Nazareth and reads a passage from Isaiah. At the end, he announces that he is the one of whom Isaiah is speaking—the Messiah, whom God has sent to save the world.
Even today, when we hear the words of Isaiah proclaimed by Jesus in today’s Gospel, we face the same choice as the people of Nazareth faced on that day long ago. We can choose to believe that Jesus is our Savior or we can choose to believe that Jesus is not our Savior.
Now we might think about that for a minute and then insist, “Well, sure. I believe in Jesus.” We might be adamant about saying “I believe that Jesus is our Savior.” We might strongly claim “I believe he suffered, died, was buried, and rose from the dead.” We might declare “I believe that I have eternal life in Jesus.”
Besides insisting that we know this and believe this, how do our lives demonstrate that we know this and believe this?
Sharing Ideas
If someone were to ask you who Jesus is, what would you say?
Acting
Image that you are in the synagogue when Jesus says that the Scripture he has just read is fulfilled in your hearing. What questions might you want to ask him?
Praying
Lord Jesus, we believe in you. Help us to put our belief into action in how we love and care for others. Amen.
