At Home with the Easter Season: Week Seven

We Pray and Celebrate with Wheat
by Maryann Ziemer
From the time of the Jewish Passover meal that
became Christ’s Last Supper, our rituals and
prayers have been rich in references to the grain
of wheat, to harvests, to bread. We express it in
our communal meals, in our mission to feed the
hungry, in thanksgiving for abundant crops, and
in the ultimate bread of life that we share in
the Eucharist.

End-of-the-Year Thank You Notes
May's tip comes from a catechist in Columbus, OHI teach second-graders. My students and I use part of the last class of the year to write thank you notes to all the people who helped us during the year. We thank parents and siblings and other family members who helped us with projects and made sure we got to class; friends who listened to our stories about what we were learning in class; our pastor, who came to talk to us about First Communion; our parish secretary, who helped us keep track of all the things we might need to do; the people who plow snow and mow grass; the crew who keeps our buildings in good repair; the people who published our textbook and other stuff we used during the year; the parish community who prayed for us; the firefighters and police officers who were always ready to keep us safe; the trash collectors who keep our parish and city clean; etc. This is a good way to help young people think outside the box.

At Home with the Easter Season: Week Six
We Produce Much Fruitby Maryann Ziemer
To the listening crowd of people, Jesus describes
the fate of a grain of wheat: “Unless a grain of
wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains
just a grain of wheat, but if it dies, it produces
much fruit” (John 12:24). From a single grain will
come many.
Jesus’listeners know what he is talking about.
They understand wheat. It’s fundamental to their
well-being. From it is made bread, the staff of
their life.
