John 2:1-11
Reflecting
We often say “all about” to describe a person’s enthusiasm for something: “My friend is all about horses.” Well, we might say that the Evangelist John is “all about” signs. In his Gospel, he often uses signs to help us understand that Jesus is the promised Messiah.
In today’s Gospel about the wedding feast at Cana, John tells of a sign that shows us who Jesus is. Jesus tells the serving people to fill six jars with water. After they do this, Jesus tells them to take some to the headwaiter. So they do that, too. The headwaiter takes a taste and discovers a very good wine. The water has become a fine wine—a wine far better than the wine the host served earlier in the festivities.
The wonderful wine at Cana is a sign of the cup of wine Jesus will share with his Apostles at the Last Supper—a wine that is actually the rarest wine of all. At the Eucharist, we take that wine and we break bread and we receive the body and blood of Jesus, which is our everlasting joy.
Sharing Ideas
Name ways in which we use signs. (Ideas might include “for information,” “for safety,” “for directions,” etc.)
Acting
Use a piece of poster board and markers to make a sign for your learning space that depicts what this Gospel teaches.
Praying
Jesus, you are the wine that gladdens our hearts. Thank you for coming to us in the Eucharist. Amen.
