Dec. 27: The Feast of the Holy Family
Luke 2:41-52
Reflecting
When Joseph and Mary return to Jerusalem to look for Jesus, as we hear in today’s Gospel, they do not give up until they find him. What joy they must feel—and “astonishment,” the Gospel tells us—when they see him in the Temple “sitting in the midst of the teachers.” The Gospel tells us that Jesus returns to Nazareth with his parents and he grows in “wisdom and age and grace before God and men.”
This account shows us the love and commitment that Mary, Joseph, and Jesus have for one another. They are devoted to the care and well-being of one another. Mary and Joseph search with all their hearts and souls until they find Jesus, and Jesus returns with Mary and Joseph to their home in Nazareth—and family life goes on.
The beautiful love in the Holy Family shows us how to be selfless and caring in our own families. No matter who lives in our household or how we are related, we are family. Everyone deserves respect, honesty, courtesy, and the best of everything we have to offer.
