A Lenten Scripture Echo
by Sandi Belleque
Use this Scripture Echo from Matthew 6:1-8, 16-18 to teach students what Jesus says about giving alms, praying, and fasting.
Use this Scripture Echo from Matthew 6:1-8, 16-18 to teach students what Jesus says about giving alms, praying, and fasting. This is a good activity to prepare students for Lent. Stand in front of students (with a chair next to you), read each line, and demonstrate the action below it. Have students stand and repeat the words and the actions. For easy reference if needed, place the pages on a music stand in front of you.

Jesus said,
(Stretch out arms)

“When you give alms,
(Pass out money)

do not boast
(Place hands on hips, look proud)

as the hypocrites do.
(Thumbs in armpits, puff out chest)

Amen I say to you
(Shake finger at students)

they have received their reward.
(Cross arms over chest, smile smugly)

Don’t let your left hand know
(Hold up left hand)

what your right hand is doing.
(Drop left hand, hold up right hand)

Your Father in heaven
(Look up)

will repay you.
(Make large sign of the cross toward students)

And when you pray,
(Fold hands in prayer)

do not boast
(Hands on hips, puff out chest)

as the hypocrites do.
(Thumbs in armpits, puff out chest)

Amen I say to you
(Shake finger at students)

they have received their reward.
(Cross arms over chest, smile smugly)

Go to your room,
(Open a door and step in)

shut the door
(Turn and close door)

and say your prayers.
(Fold hands in prayer)

Your Father in heaven
(Look up)

will repay you.
(Make large sign of the cross toward students)

When you fast,
(Rub tummy)

don’t look gloomy
(Sad face, rub tummy)

like the hypocrites do.
(Thumbs in armpits, puff out chest)

Amen I say to you
(Shake finger at students)

they have received their reward.
(Cross arms over chest, smile smugly)

Anoint your head
(Place hand on top of head)

and wash your face.
(Rub palms over face)

Your Father in heaven
(Look up)

will repay you.”
(Make large sign of the cross toward students)
