* Make holders for small things, such as jewelry. This is a nice Mother’s Day gift. Cut a sheet of paper or card stock the size of the lid of the egg carton and write (or print the words on a computer) “Mom, Our Jewel” or “Mom, God’s Gift” or any personal message on it. Glue the paper or card stock on the lid of the carton. Line egg cups with white or colorful art tissue paper. (TIPS: For clear plastic cartons, take out the company label and replace it with your message.) You also can use this handy holder as an organizer for favorite Scripture passages, prayers, or summer projects and activities. Write Scripture quotes, prayers, and summer projects on strips of paper and organize them in the holder according to days of the week or by categories: Scripture, Prayer, Projects, etc.

* Make a “Summer-of-Service Treasure Box” the same way you made the holder above. There are roughly 12 weeks during the summer and there are 12 egg cups in the carton. In each egg cup, put several pieces of paper on which you have written things you will do that week to help your family, friends, and neighbors; things you can do for your parish and community; things you can do for others around the world. You might want to put seven in each egg cup and take one slip out each day of the week.

* Make a “fishing tackle.” This is a nice Father’s Day gift. Follow above ideas, substituting a message for Dad. Or use wording that makes the tackle a nice gift for anyone, perhaps Jesus’ words, “I will make you fishers of people.” This makes a nice prayer table item; fill it with small construction-paper fish.

* Make a bouquet of flowers. Carefully cut off and dispose of the top of the carton. Then cut out each individual egg cup to serve as blooms. Cut slits into the rims of the cups to add greater detail to the “petals.” Push a pipe cleaner through the bottom of the bloom, crimping the end inside the bloom to hold the pipe cleaner in place. Twelve of these make a lovely bouquet.

* Make caterpillars as religious symbols and to celebrate spring. Turn the egg cartons upside down. Decorate this side with markers, paint, swatches of material and brightly colored paper, different colors of craft fluff balls. Be sure to give each caterpillar a mouth and eyes.
